New Hanover High School Army JROTC
Held Annual Individual Awards Ceremony

New Hanover High School’s Wildcat Battalion recently held its 72nd Annual Individual Awards Ceremony on the school's campus. The following awards and medals were presented:

•Cadet LTC Ashley Brown and Cadet Battalion Commander presented the Gold Star to Cadet SGT Luis Acosta. The Gold Star indicates that the battalion has again been designated “Honor Unit with Distinction,” the highest award given by the U.S. Army Cadet Command.

•Junior Varsity Rifle Team Medals were presented to Cadets CPL Andrew Christie, SGT Luis Acosta, PFC Alex England, PFC Allison Tetreault, PFC CJ Jones, and SFC Jonathan Oehling.

•Varsity Rifle Team Medals were presented to Cadets 2LT Irvin Ruiz, 1SG David Johnson, SFC Marco Acosta, and SFC Jaryd Renshaw.

•Drill Team Medals were awarded to Cadets MAJ Bobby James, CPT Meshel’le Roach, 1SG Bianca Edgerton, SGT Taneal Swinson, SGT James Jones, CPT Stacie Rembert, PFC Chris James, SGT Brian Kirkpatrick, SGT Danielle Clemmons, SFC LaQntis Young, and 2LT Andramada Jones.

•Principal Medals were awarded to Cadets CPL Stephen Manley, SGT Matthew Sanders, 2LT Mia Roland, 1SG Bianca Edgerton, CPT Stacie Rembert, 2LT Craig Powell, SFC Reba Maroldt, 2LT Andromeda Jones, 1SG Ivan Matsumura, and SSG Daniel Lockwood.

•Mrs. Perry Penney presented the Cadet Bobby Harker Memorial Award to Cadets PFC Dakota Houser, Rocio Gutierrez, PFC Bryan Copeland, PFC Jennifer Schoonover, PFC Jonathan Page, PFC Ashley Williams, PFC Alex England, PFC Gregory Little, and SGT Brandon Kendrick.

•Service Learning Medals, for 25 or more volunteer hours, were presented to Cadets SGT Luis Acosta, SGT James Jones, SGT Brandon Kendrick, SGT Matthew Sanders, 2LT Craig Powell, and PFC Jonathan Page.

•Flag pins, for 15 - 25 volunteer hours, were presented to Cadets LTC Ashley Brown, PFC Ashley Williams, CPT Meshel’le Roach, PFC William Bowers, and CPL Stephen Manly.

•The Peggy/Thomas Mason Awards, given to the top three cadets who contributed the most hours to community and fundraising activities, were presented to Cadet 1SG Ivan Matsumura (55.5 hours), Cadet SSG Jonathan Oehling (74 hours) and Cadet MAJ Bobby James (97.8 hours).

•Flag detail pins were presented to Cadets PFC Alex England, CPL Stephen Manley, SGT Chris James, PFC Dakota and PFC William Bowers.

•The Distinguished Cadet Medal for Scholastic Excellence and Academic Excellence and Honor Society Cord were presented to Cadet CPT Joel Puritz with a 4.4 GPA.

•Academic Achievement Awards were presented to Freshman Cadet SSG Jonathan Oehling, Sophomore Cadet SFC Jaryd Renshaw, Junior Cadet CPT Joel Puritz, and Senior Cadet LTC Ashley Brown.

•Academic Medals for achieving a 3.0 Cumulative GPA were presented to Cadets MAJ Bobby James, SFC Reba Maroldt, SGT James Jones, and SGT Luis Acosta.

•The Best Cadet NCO Medal for the top Cadet NCO was presented to Cadet 1SG Ivan Matsumura.

•Ms. Sylvia Avent presented the Daughters of the American Revolution Medal and Certificate to Cadet SSG Daniel Lockwood.

•SFC Harry Shepherd presented the Association of the United States Army Braxton Bragg Chapter Medal to Cadet SSG Jonathan Oehling.

•Mr. Bob Avent presented Sons of America Revolution Medal and Certificate to Cadet SGT Taneal Swinson.

•SFC Shepherd presented the U.S. Army Recruiting Command Medal to 1SG David Johnson.

•Mr. Matt Matthews presented The Military Officers Association of America Medal, certificate, and savings bond to Cadet MAJ Bobby James. He also presented a $2,000 scholarship from the Military Officers Association of America to Cadet LTC Ashley Brown.

•SFC Shepherd presented the Military Order of World Wars Bronze Medal to Cadet MAJ Bobby James and the Reserve Officers Association Medal to Cadet SGT Matthew Sanders.

•LT Justin Raphael, USA Retired, and CPT Dunnegans, USA Retired, presented the American Legion Post 10 Scholastic Excellence Medal to Cadet LTC Ashley Brown, the American Legion Military Excellence Medal to Cadet CPT Joel Puritz. and the American Legion Certificate of Distinguished Achievement and Medallion to Cadet CPT Meshel’le Roach.

•SFC Shepherd presented the National Scottish Rite ROTC Medal to Cadet LTC Ashley Brown, the National Sojourners ROTC Medal to Cadet SGT James Jones, and the AMVETS Medal to Cadet SGT Luis Acosta.

•Mr. William Ebersbach presented the Military Order of the Purple Heart Medal to Cadet 1SG Ivan Matsumura.

•The Department of the Army Superior Cadet Medal and Ribbon was presented to Cadets SGT Luis Acosta, SSG Jonathan Oehling, 1SG Ivan Matsumura, MAJ Bobby James, CPT Joel Puritz,1SG David Johnson, and Cadet LTC Ashley Brown.

•At the end of the ceremony the unit’s top award, the Cape Fear Sword, was awarded to the senior/seniors who contributed the most to the program. The sword was presented in honor of SGT John “Mac” Smith, NHHS Class of 2000, who gave his life for our freedom while fighting in the war against terrorism. Swords were presented to Cadet CPT Meshel’le Roach and Cadet LTC Ashley Brown.
