New Hanover High School Named One of the Top Public
Schools in the United States

New Hanover High School has been named one of the top 1,500 public schools in the United States, for the fifth consecutive year, by Newsweek magazine. Less than six percent of public high schools in the United States qualify for the Newsweek list.

Public schools are ranked according to the following ratio:

- The number of Advanced Placement, Intl. Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in 2008 divided by the number of graduating seniors.

- The percentage of students receiving federally subsidized meals.

- The portion of all graduating seniors at a school that had at least one passing grade on one AP or IB test.

The Challenge Index is designed to honor schools that have done the best job in persuading average students to take college-level courses and tests.

"We are very pleased to be included on this list again this year. We are even more pleased that our students are taking AP courses in greater numbers than ever before. We believe this is one indication that our students are challenging themselves and our staff is encouraging them to do so. We are also very pleased that our performance on the AP exams in 2007-2008 was the highest in five years and we hope to improve upon that mark when we receive our 2008-2009 results," Principal Chris Furr said.
