Three New Hanover
County Elementary Schools
Partner with NC Aquarium Raising Southern Toads
Select classrooms at Carolina Beach
Elementary School, Mary C. Williams Elementary School and Rachel
Freeman School of Engineering have been helping raise thousands
of Southern toads, through a partnership with the North Carolina
Aquarium at Fort Fisher. Students will release their Southern
toads into the Watha State Fish Hatchery in Watha, NC, on
Tuesday, May 26, 2009.
“Amphibians in the Classroom,” offered
by the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher, is a program to promote an
environmental stewardship among students, while creating a
better understanding of amphibians and the environment we share.
Students watched and participated in the care to morph Southern
toads from toad eggs to adults. Toad eggs were delivered to the
classrooms in late March and soon hatched into tadpoles.
Students learned more about amphibians and their growth with the
assistance of their teacher and guide provided by the aquarium.
Funding for this program was generously
supported by the Cherbec Foundation.
