Wrightsboro Elementary School "Celebrating a Century"

On Friday, June 5, 2009, Wrightsboro Elementary School will be “Celebrating a Century.” The celebration will begin at 9:00 a.m., in the Wrightsboro Baptist Church Sanctuary, at 2736 Castle Hayne Road, Castle Hayne, NC, adjacent to the school. Following the ceremony, refreshments will be served in Wrightsboro Elementary School’s Multipurpose Room, and student guided tours of the newly renovated facility will be available.

Wrightsboro Elementary School began as a two-room school serving approximately 90 students. There were two teachers and two rooms; one for grades 1 - 4 and one for grades 5 - 8. In 1924, the New Hanover County Board of Education purchased additional land and built a one-story brick building, which enrolled 155 students. In 1939, the second story was added to the school and the cafeteria was built in 1953. In 1963, six additional classrooms were added and six more classrooms were built in 1968. In 1971, Wrightsboro began serving grades 1-4, and the first kindergarten class was added in 1973. In 1982, Wrightsboro became the fifth largest elementary school in the county.

In 1997, the old 1924 building was renovated, which included:

  • Fifteen rooms
  • Modern library
  • Multi-purpose room

Today, Wrightsboro Elementary Schools has 44 certified teachers, 28 classroom teachers, serving approximately 575 students in grades K-5.
