UNCW Students Join New Hanover
County Schools
Public Relations Department
New Hanover County Schools
recently expanded its Public Relations Department with the
addition of two student interns. Sterling Scott and Caitlin
McCusker, both students at the University of North Carolina at
Wilmington, have joined the Public Relations Department seeking
to garner some “real world” experience in the public relations
industry.
Their duties include writing press
releases, conducting research for media inquiries, planning and
promoting special events, producing newsletters, answering media
calls, and providing general assistance to the public relations
staff.
The Public Relations Department is
responsible for the distribution of public information from and
throughout the school system. This is done in a variety of ways
including press releases, newsletters, mailings, and television,
through NHCS Television.
Sterling Scott, a second year
student, and junior at UNCW, is pursuing majors in Communication
Studies and Film Studies, as well as a minor in Journalism.
Undecided on a career pathway, he would like a career in travel
journalism, aviation, or public relations. Aside from his
classes and internship, he is also a Resident Assistant in
Graham-Hewlett, a residence hall on campus and a writer for The
Seahawk, the school newspaper.
Caitlin McCusker, a junior,
Communication Studies major at UNCW, is from Delaware. She is
majoring in Communication Studies with a focus on Public
Relations. On campus, she is a member of the Communication
Studies Society and the UNCW Advertising Chapter.
Both new interns are looking
forward to working with the Public Relations Department of New
Hanover County Schools. They are eager to not only learn as much
as they can while gaining valuable experience in the field, but
also the interns will contribute to the overall productivity and
efficiency of the Public Relations Department.
