Roland-Grise Middle School
Teachers Attend Summer Staff Development
Five educators from Roland-Grise
Middle School attended a North Carolina Teacher Academy at the
Radisson RTP in Raleigh, NC, June 22-26, 2008. The participants
included Elin Reuben, Erin Brown, Louise Miller, Connie Soles,
and Margarete Fedora.
The North Carolina Teacher Academy is a professional development
program established and funded by the North Carolina General
Assembly. The mission of the Teacher Academy is to enrich
instruction and impact student achievement by supporting the
growth and retention of highly qualified teachers through
research-based professional development in the areas of school
leadership, instructional methodology, core-content, and
technology.
The teachers from Roland-Grise attended the module,
Differentiated Instruction in K-12 Classrooms. Understanding the
need for differentiated instruction is a key part of instruction
that will help every student to reach success. This module
provided teachers key principles of differentiation, strategies
such as flexible grouping, and an implementation plan to
successfully apply differentiation in today's classroom. Not
only did teachers learn from the instruction given in the module
but the interaction and sharing among teachers from all across
the state allowed teachers to learn from each other.
This sharing of ideas will continue online in both the fall and
the spring with follow up activities. Teachers will try the
ideas, strategies and activities explored in the session with
their students during the school year, and then discuss the
experiences with other participants on Blackboard.
Elin Reuben said, "Learning how to help my students become more
successful is such an exciting part of teaching and I can't wait
to apply the new strategies I have gained this week!" Another
teacher, Erin Brown, stated, “In these days of standardized
testing, teacher academy showed me how I can still successfully
create an environment where learning is not “one size fits all.”
Other residential teacher academies are taking place at
Appalachian State University, Chowan University, Elon
University, Lenoir-Rhyne College, NC A&T State University, and
Western Carolina University. This year educators had the choice
of selecting from twenty-one topics. All modules have been
designed to include a combination of current theory complemented
by direct hands-on activities.
