New Hanover County Schools
Offer Special Programs
to Challenge Students to Lead in a Competitive World
As New Hanover County Schools
continues to challenge students to become leaders in a global
competitive world, the following programs are options to help
them become more successful:
North Carolina Virtual Public School:
The North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS) is
available in all New Hanover County traditional high schools.
This is a supplemental service, not a diploma granting program.
Presently, New Hanover County Schools are only offering the
courses to high school students. Careful attention is given to
the student's ability to be successful in online courses and to
the curriculum plan that is selected for the individual.
Students must be currently enrolled in one of the county’s
traditional high schools. Students can obtain high school course
credit to complete the requirements of a high school diploma and
enhance their transcripts for college applications. Interested
students are encouraged to meet with their school counselor to
explore whether or not NCVPS courses would supplement their
curriculum plan well.
For more information, visit the North Carolina Virtual Public
School website at
www.ncvps.org.
Learn and Earn Online:
New Hanover County high school students can earn college
credits through a special initiative called Learn & Earn Online,
while satisfying their high school graduation requirements.
Qualified students can take a variety of online college-credit
courses, at no cost to them or to their families for courses or
textbooks.
Courses are offered during fall and spring semesters through
UNCG iSchool and local community colleges. Interested students
should contact their school counselor or UNCG iSchool at
336-315-7044. Additional information is also available at
www.icampus.uncg.edu.
Huskins’ Program:
New Hanover County high schools, in collaboration with Cape
Fear Community College, offer Huskins courses to juniors and
seniors. These courses are available to students who are at
least 16 years old, earn a minimum SAT verbal score of 470 and
math score of 450 or take the Accuplacer exam. This computer
adaptive placement test measures skills in math and English,
which will assist in placing students in appropriate courses.
The Huskins' program is designed to provide high school students
with enrichment opportunities in college level academic,
technical, and advanced vocational courses not otherwise
available to them. Through Huskins, NHCS and Cape Fear Community
College can provide an uninterrupted educational flow for
students. These articulated programs enable students to take
college courses while in high school and earn credit at both.
