New Hanover County Schools Honor Educators

On Thursday, September 11, 2008, the New Hanover County Schools’ (NHCS) Board of Education and the Wachovia Bank honored 42 teachers and eight principals at the Educator of the Year banquet, which was held at the UNC-Wilmington Burney Center.

At the banquet there were 200 in attendance, which included NHCS’ Board members, senior staff, school administrators, teachers and representatives from Wachovia Bank. The guests were entertained by Ashley High School’s Color Guard, Honors Chorus and Orchestra. The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the Educators of the Year. The Teachers of the Year named were:

Elementary School- Jenny Leeds, Ogden Elementary School
Middle School - Christine Wegmann, Myrtle Grove Middle School
High School - John Rinka, Hoggard High School

2008-2009 New Hanover County School’s Teacher of the Year - John Rinka

LaChawn Smith, principal at Murray Middle School, was named the 2008-2009 Principal of the Year.

Each winner was cited for their outstanding contributions to education and presented with awards from the NHCS' Board of Education and Wachovia Bank.

Both John Rinka and LaChawn Smith will go on to represent New Hanover County Schools at the regional level and possibly advance to the state level.
