Parsley Morning Walking Club

Parsley Morning Walking Club
Gets Students Moving!

  • Research indicates that physical activity makes children ready to learn.
  • Exercise habits learned at an early age tend to persist into adulthood.
  • Childhood obesity is at epidemic proportions in the United States.

For these reasons and others, the Parsley Elementary School PTA started a morning walking program during the 2005-2006 school year.  In this program, students walk outside any time (on their scheduled days) beginning at any time between 7:30 and 7:45 and may continue walking until 7:50. This program is optional and all Parsley students are invited to join.  Students may participate in every session or as desired.  During the 2009-2010 school year, students in grades K - 2 walk on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students in grades 3 -5 walk on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Students arrive at school in accordance with normal school procedures, proceed to their classrooms to drop off their belongings and check in with the staff member on duty in their rooms and then proceed outside to the walking track.  Personal belongings should be left in the classroom.

Before Walking Club begins for the school year, all students will be introuduced to the Walking Club Expectations and will be held accountable for these rules.

Adult volunteers will be identified with “I’m a Walking Volunteer!” identification clips. Volunteers are used to monitor children on the track and in the hallways.

The total number of laps students walk will be tracked and recorded to be shared with all students during announcements.

Parents are also welcome to come and walk with their child.
