Parsley
Morning Walking Club
Gets
Students Moving!
- Research indicates that physical activity makes
children ready to learn.
- Exercise habits learned at an early
age tend to persist into adulthood.
- Childhood obesity is
at epidemic proportions in the United States.
|
For these reasons and others, the
Parsley Elementary School PTA started a morning walking program
during the 2005-2006 school year. In this program, students
walk outside any time (on their scheduled days) beginning at any
time between 7:30 and 7:45 and may continue walking until 7:50.
This program is optional and all
Parsley students are invited to join. Students
may participate in every session or as desired. During the
2009-2010 school year, students in grades K - 2 walk on Tuesdays
and Thursdays. Students in grades 3 -5 walk on Wednesdays and Fridays.
Students arrive at school in accordance with normal
school procedures, proceed to their classrooms to drop off their
belongings and check in with the staff member on duty in their rooms
and then proceed outside to the walking track. Personal belongings should be left in the classroom.
Before Walking Club begins for the school year,
all
students will be introuduced to the Walking
Club Expectations and
will be held accountable for these rules.

Adult
volunteers will be identified with “I’m
a Walking Volunteer!” identification clips. Volunteers
are used to monitor children on the track
and in the hallways.
The total number of laps students
walk will be tracked and recorded to be shared with all students
during announcements.
Parents are also welcome
to come and walk with their child.
