Drawing is illegible or multiple random topics are addressed. Drawing focuses on one topic with discernible setting and/or characters. Detail is extremely limited or nonexistent. Drawing focuses on one topic with discernible setting and characters. Some detail is used in depicting both setting and characters - or strong detail is used in depicting either character or setting. Drawing focuses on one topic with clearly discernible setting and characters. Multiple detail is used in depicting both setting and characters.

 Criterion

Does not engage in "writing" of any type, including linear mock writing. Attempts to form letters - separates "writing" from drawing. Forms letters - attempts to form words through the use of some letter-sound relationships - some words may be decipherable - separates "writing" from drawing. Uses initial and final consonants in the creation of most words- a connection can be made by the reader between what is drawn and what is written.
