Students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade learn science in alignment with the NC Science Standard Course of Study.

In addition to science books, teachers may choose to use Science Kits to supplement the science program. The science kits arrive four times throughout the school year and provide the opportunity for students to get a better understanding of science concepts.

Social Study skills are based on the NC Social Studies Standard Course of Study

Science Kits Each science kits allows for the opportunity to Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate. With this instructional model, the teacher first finds out what students already know and then provides experiences within which students can compare what they think about they are observing and experiencing. They then connect their previous experiences and begin to make conceptual sense of the main ideas of the module.

Students apply or extend their concepts through new situations and relate their previous experiences to new ones. Finally, through written work and performance tasks, a summative assessment is made of what students know and can do.

North Carolina, County by County

As a part of the Social Studies curriculum, 4th grade students research a county in North Carolina and then present their work in various formats.

Students display what they learn in various formats. In addition to writing a report, many students use poster boards or make 3D displays. Information may also be shown electronically as a multimedia presentation. North Carolina projects are often displayed at Walk of Discovery or sometimes at a special "North Carolina Museum" display in our multipurpose room.
