Tech Tips fro Parents

The Internet is a wonderful tool for students, and when used SAFELY, can provide a wealth of resources and hours of fun.

When children begin using the computer, and especially the Internet, parents should set down some guidelines for their children to follow and monitor their time on the computer. Below are suggested safety tips that parents and children should read together and discuss why each is important.

computer
1. Children should use the computer, and especially the Internet, only after asking prior permission from an adult.
computer
2. Children should never freely 'surf' the Internet. They should constantly be supervised by an adult and only visit sites approved of by their parents/guardians.
computer
3. Children should NEVER give out personal information such as name, address, phone number, age, school name, passwords, etc. without permission from an adult. This includes filling out online forms or sending pictures. Remember that people online may pretend to be someone they are not.
computer
4. Children must NEVER agree to meet with someone they have "met" online without first checking with a parent/guardian.
computer
5. Children should not respond to any message that is mean, rude, makes them feel uncomfortable or confused (such as someone asking them for personal information). If they receive such messages, they should tell an adult immediately.
computer
6. If a child comes across inappropriate material, he/she should tell an adult immediately. If necessary, he/she can turn off the monitor.
computer
7. Children should be good online citizens and use good manners and behavior when "chatting" online.
computer
