NHCS Holds Ribbon-Cutting and Dedication Ceremony
for New Hoggard Gymnasium, Cafeteria, and Other Renovations

New Hanover County Schools celebrated the opening of the new John T. Hoggard High School Sheila Boles Gymnasium, cafeteria and other renovations on Wednesday, October 18, 2017, with a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony. New Hanover County Board of Education members, New Hanover County Commissioners, Mayor Bill Saffo and the Wilmington City Council, district administrators, Hoggard faculty, staff, PTA, alumni, and students were invited to attend and participate in the ceremony. Many thanks are extended to the taxpayers of New Hanover County who approved the 2014 Bond Referendum that made these and other new school facilities possible.

The ceremony began with a welcome from Hoggard Principal Dr. Steve Sullivan and included remarks from the dignitaries, including Board Chairman Edward B. Higgins, and Mr. John Murray of Bowman, Murray and Hemingway Architects. Mr. Murray presented details about the new facilities. Dr. Sullivan introduced Ms. Sheila Boles, guest of honor. After her speech, Coach Brett Queen and the Hoggard Varsity basketball team presented Ms. Boles with a special gift of a framed #20 commemorative basketball jersey from Coach Boles’ coaching era to recognize her 20 years of service. Hoggard choral students provided entertainment with the performance of two songs under the direction of Mr. Benjamin Horrell. The event concluded with guided tours of the new Sheila Boles gymnasium, and the renovated cafeteria and front office area. A reception immediately followed the ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony in the Media Center.

Construction on the project began on June 13, 2016, and was completed on August 18, 2017. The total cost of construction is $14,570,253.39.
