NHCS Holds Ribbon-Cutting and Dedication Ceremony
for Pre-K Program Expansion at the Career Readiness Academy at Mosley

New Hanover County Schools will hold a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony for the Pre-K Program expansion at the Career Readiness Academy at the Mosley Performance Learning Center on Wednesday, October 25, 2017, at 10:00 a.m., at 3701 Princess Place Drive. New Hanover County Board of Education members, New Hanover County Commissioners, district administrators, Early Childhood Education Program staff, parents, and students have been invited to attend and participate in the ceremony. This Pre-K Program expansion will serve 45 three-year-old children from the Head Start waiting list.

The ceremony will begin with a welcome from the Director of Early Childhood Education Shannon Smiles and remarks from dignitaries, including Board Chairman Edward B. Higgins, Jr., Board Member and Head Start Liaison Bruce T. Shell, and Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley will provide closing remarks. Ms. Smiles will present details about the renovations of the facility to accommodate the Pre-K students. The event will conclude with guided tours of the new Pre-K areas led by instructional staff. A reception will follow the program in the Career Development Center.

Pre-K Program Expansion Renovation Details

The New Hanover County Commissioners awarded the New Hanover County Schools Early Childhood Education Program expansion project $472,000 of which $100,000 was budgeted to complete the renovations and purchase furniture. In order to prepare the building to accept Pre-K students, the following renovations were made:

  • 3 classrooms were brightened with new paint.
  • The HVAC system was updated to heat pumps replacing steam radiators.
  • The classroom bathrooms were updated with new tiles, ceilings, and lighting.
  • A new bus drop location was created with access walks.
  • A new playground was installed to accommodate Pre-K children.
