DJ Batiste - From Gang Leader to Graduate

New Hanover County Schools is excited to bring Motivational Speaker DJ Batiste to Snipes Academy of Arts and Design on August 29, 2017, at 6:00 p.m. Mr. Batiste will speak to teachers and parents about how he turned his life around, and how his life was impacted by one teacher during his senior year using the Conscious Discipline method.

Conscious Discipline is an evidence-based and research-backed social and emotional learning method founded by Becky Bailey, Ph.D., an award-winning author, renowned teacher and internationally recognized expert on child education and development psychology. The Conscious Discipline method provides a transformational, whole-school solution for social-emotional learning, discipline, and self-regulation. It equips educators to integrate social-emotional learning, discipline, and self-regulation so they spend less time policing behavior and more time teaching vital life skills. Conscious Discipline is a proven, comprehensive approach that empowers schools with skills that create a safe, connected, problem-solving environment for families.

Mr. Batiste was born in Louisiana to teenage parents but was raised by his grandmother. As a pre-school student, he was expelled from of Head Start and later found himself in juvenile detention. He began leading a large violent gang in Mississippi until one day he was introduced to nonviolent ways to deal with issues and confrontations. During his senior year in high school, he encountered a teacher, Donna Porter, who introduced him to Conscious Discipline. Today, Mrs. Porter and Mr. Batiste travel the country to motivate teachers, students, and families about positive teacher-student connections and to share their experiences to encourage school districts and communities to use Conscious Discipline. Mr. Batiste has many motivational YouTube videos inspiring students to use their words versus their hands.

Mr. Batiste’s visit is timely since the NHCS Pre-Kindergarten Program is in its third year of implementation of Conscious Discipline. This event is sponsored by the New Hanover County Schools Title I Program and is free and open to the public.
