New Hanover County Schools’ Transition Fair Offers Opportunities
for Parents and Students with Special Needs

In observance of National Disability Employment Awareness month, the New Hanover County Schools Transition Advisory Team will hold the 2017 Transition Fair for parents and students with disabilities and special needs. The fair will be held on Thursday, October 26, 2017, beginning at 9:30 a.m., at Cape Fear Community College Union Station, 502 North Front Street, Wilmington. Admission is free and no registration is required.

The Transition Fair will feature agencies and community supports for families with students from preschool level through high school. The community has been generous with donations for this event and there will be raffles throughout the day for door prizes.

Students with disabilities in our high schools prepare for the transition to the community and jobs by participating in paid and unpaid internships. In these internships, they work on skills ranging from customer satisfaction to skilled employment. Area industry and foods services such as K&W cafeteria, Walmart, McDonald's, Fenner Drives, and many others welcome our students in these internships and have even offered permanent employment in some cases.

Wilmington area agencies and employers will be available from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to speak with students and parents. Evening events start at 4:30 p.m., with agency representative available to speak with students and parents until 7:00 p.m. Students from the Career Readiness Academy Mosley Performance Learning Center, Ashley, Hoggard, Laney and New Hanover High Schools will be given the opportunity to participate in the Fair during the day.
