Ashley High School NJROTC Cadet Awarded National Flight Academy
Ashley High School junior and NJROTC Cadet Whitney Daughtry has
been awarded the JJ Coonan Scholarship to attend the National
Flight Academy in Pensacola, Florida for the summer 2015
program. Her scholarship will cover the full price of tuition
for the six-day program.
The program is an immersive learning adventure in the world’s
largest simulated aircraft carrier for 7th through 12th grade
students, designed to inspire interest in Science, Technology,
Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Participants live for 6 days
in a multi-story, 102,000 square foot facility surrounded by
advanced technology, flight simulators, and virtual reality
games that ignite imagination and encourage learning.

About the JJ Coonan Scholarship
Retired Navy Captain John J. Coonan, Jr., who passed away on
June 12, 2009, served over 30 years as a career Naval Officer.
Upon his retirement from active duty in 1996, Captain Coonan
joined the staff at the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation in
Pensacola, Florida. His most lasting contribution is his
stewardship of the National Flight Academy. The academy is the
leading aviation-inspired education program in the country.
