NHC Board of Education Member Appointed as Co-Chair
of State Academic Standards Review Commission

NHC Board of Education Board Memeber Tammy CovilNew Hanover County Board of Education Member Tammy Covil has been appointed as the new co-chairperson for the Academic Standards Review Commission. She is replacing former co-chair Jeannie Metcalf.

“I look forward to leading the Academic Standards Review Commission and continuing to positively impact education for all NC students," Mrs. Covil said.

Background of Academic Standards Review Commission
The function of the Academic Standards Review Commission is to review the K-12 English Language Arts and Math standards for the state and recommend changes and revisions to the North Carolina Board of Education. The Commission will work to ensure current standards meet all of the following criteria:

  • Increase students' level of academic achievement;
  • Meet and reflect North Carolina's priorities;
  • Are age-level and developmentally appropriate;
  • Are understandable to parents and teachers;
  • Are among the highest standards in the nation.

The Commission will also recommend assessments aligned with their proposed modifications that reduce the number of high-stakes assessments administered to public schools. When making any recommendations, the Commission will consider the impact on educators, including the need for professional development.

The Commission will make a final report of its findings and recommendations to the State Board of Education, the Joint Legislative Education Oversight Committee and the 2016 Session of the 2015 General Assembly. The Commission will conclude no later than December 31, 2015.
