Gregory Hosts "Topping Off Reading" Event on 5/19

Gregory Elementary School of Science, Mathematics and Technology will hold a “Topping Off Reading” frozen yogurt sundae party for their students on Thursday, May 19, 2016. To encourage all students to do their very best on end-of-year Text Reading Comprehension (TRC) assessments, Gregory staff presented a challenge to their students: for every reading level they grew from their middle-of-the-year assessments to the end-of-year, each student could earn a sundae topping during a frozen yogurt party. Students readily accepted the challenge, got serious about their reading, and the results were growth.

“Gregory is so proud of the reading successes we have seen in our students,” said Principal Krista Holland. “This isn’t just about test scores--or frozen yogurt -- this is about instilling a passion for reading in our students.”

“Many students at middle-of-the-year assessment time seemed upset about having to read and answer questions about yet another book when they moved up a level,” said Instructional Coach Cynthia Cathey. “However, the external motivation of earning sundae toppings led to a complete attitude change towards testing. Now I get to report daily about the progress that students are making, and how some of the older students get a little upset if they fall short of a level U, which is the highest level they can achieve, and the level that would earn them unlimited sundae toppings.”

The reading celebration, featuring catered frozen yogurt and a toppings bar from the Fuzzy Peach in Leland, will be held on May 19th beginning at 10:30 a.m. and continuing through all lunch periods. Members of the Wilmington Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and St. Luke AME Zion Church made donations to co-sponsor this event, and will be on hand to help serve the students.
