Lyceum Academy Students Travel to Maryland for National History Day Competition

Four Lyceum Academy students from New Hanover High School recently placed second in the exhibit category at the North Carolina High School History Day competition to qualify for the National Championship. James Murray, Connor Sledzik, Andrew Stoycos, and Gunar Swartzlander, all rising seniors, traveled to College Park, Maryland to take part in the national event.

National History Day is a program designed to promote interest in the discipline of history among students and to provide an opportunity for those students to apply their knowledge of history. This year’s National History Day theme was Turning Points in History, and the Lyceum group researched and showcased the Manhattan Project. The students spent the last few weeks of the school year strengthening their project to prepare for the competition at the National Fair. Thirty Lyceum students competed at the State Championship in April, showcasing a wide variety of topics after winning their respective categories at the District Championship in March.
