New Hanover High School Students Can Now "Read and Ride"

New Hanover High School Students Can Now "Read and Ride"New Hanover High School (NHHS) now has two new recumbent bicycles installed in their school library where students can “Read and Ride,” working out both their bodies and brains at the same time. Inspired by similar programs in Virginia and Winston-Salem, NC, NHHS Media Coordinator Melissa George was eager to give the Wildcats the opportunity to fit in some of their recommended daily physical activity while simultaneously catching up on reading and schoolwork.

“I was enthusiastic to bring the bikes into the Wildcat Library. Students now have the opportunity to stretch their muscles while also stretching their minds as they read and ride on the stationary bikes,” said Principal James McAdams.

Ms. George partnered with New Hanover County Schools Lead Healthful Living Coordinator Jayne Emma to present the idea to Principal McAdams. They shared research that links physical activity to increased blood flow to the brain, sharpened neurological function and improved concentration.
