D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy Showcases School
and Establishes a New School Culture for Success
- Virgo Update -

D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy will host a "School Showcase" on Thursday, February 21, 2013, for rising 6th grade students interested in applying for the 2013-2014 school year. There will be two sessions to choose from - 3:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Both sessions will be held on-campus at 813 Nixon Street. Families are invited to attend and learn from Principal Eric Irizarry and his staff why Virgo makes an excellent middle school choice. A guided tour will also be provided. Approximately 50 sixth grade students will be accepted for the upcoming school year.

D.C. Virgo Points of Pride
Technology integration provides each student with their own iPad. Athletic programs will be offered next year and will include basketball, softball, football and lacrosse. Currently, the school's most popular elective is the D.C. Virgo Band. The band is made up of 72 students and has quickly earned a reputation as one of NHCS' most talented group of young musicians.

Principal Eric Irizarry said, "It is going to take some time for us to achieve the high academic goals we have set. Right now, we are establishing our new school culture and gaining momentum every day. So far, Virgo has celebrated some great accomplishments including: a 97% attendance rate, strong community partnerships, academic and social growth, strong arts and enrichment programs, and positive parental approval."

Virgo reopened in 2012 with an enrollment of 120 "Lions" - the school's new mascot which represents pride. Virgo offers a unique learning experience through strong leadership, dynamic teachers, an eager student body, and a solid community support base. Innovative programs aimed at fostering a love of learning and integration of parental involvement have had some positive results. There are still some challenges; however, the school has a strong advisory board to work with them, and the staff and students are moving forward to reach high goals.

Support for Parents
The school provides parent-friendly programs such as an extended school day from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., employment referral services, and a Legal Education Series for parents supported by the Blue Ribbon Commission (BRC) staff. Parents also have access to a new "Parent Room" designed for meetings, training, and encouraging parental involvement.

Community Partnerships
Partnerships with local community leaders such as the BRC and University of North Carolina-Wilmington provide various support systems including: mentors for students, tutors, teachers of the elective classes, and more. On "Enrichment Fridays," students have opportunities to learn film making, martial arts, ceramics, and leadership skills. Students also take field trips to local places such as the Cameron Art Museum and government agencies including the District Attorney's Office.
