The New Hanover County
Schools announces the Elementary Special Education Reorganization Plan for
2007-2008. The primary issue addressed by this plan is a major
reassignment (redistricting) of elementary-age students. Many students
with disabilities will be assigned to new schools, like their non-disabled
peers, and the services they need will follow them to their new school
assignments.
The Plan also includes several program improvements including: location of
programs at newer schools which are better designed for our students with
disabilities, greater exposure of students with mild disabilities to
grade-level instruction, a stronger focus on services to students with autism,
pairing of programs serving students with more significant disabilities at several
schools for enhanced programmatic opportunities and efficiency, and a major
staff development program for teachers.
