HOME/HOSPITAL INSTRUCTION

The New Hanover County Schools system provides Home/Hospital Instruction to students so that they may continue to succeed even under unusual circumstances. Home/Hospital instruction is managed through the Exceptional Programs Department.  Instructors are certified teachers who have a variety of experience and specialties to serve the needs of ALL students in the system.

Frequent Questions & Answers

 Who can receive Home/Hospital services?

How are these services accessed?

What does the Plan for Intervention typically include?

What will the case manager do?

·         Facilitate communication between all parties involve

·         Coordinate the flow of assignments

·         Keep everyone informed of the student's condition

When the student is out for an extended period of time, how will tests and grades be given?

The Hospital/Home teacher will give tests to the student in a timely manner as needed with appropriate accommodations for physical limitations.  The class teacher will determine grades with input from the H/H teacher as needed.

Why is an exchange of information needed with the physician?

A school official must re-certify extended time beyond the initial period indicated by the physician.  Consultation is often necessary to plan a transition back to school.

Who will the parent or physician contact at the school if they have questions or problems?

The case manager is the appropriate person to contact. This person will be someone who will advocate for the student and notify administrators if there are problems.

Why is an Intervention Plan needed for expectant students before H/H services are needed?

What can a parent do to help a student who is out of school for an extended period?

What can H/H services do for the frequently absent student who has a chronic medical condition?

If the student has a 504 Intervention Plan in place, the plan could include a tutorial visit with assignments from the school. The time before notification of H/H would be determined on an individual basis.
