Dr. Tim Markley
Superintendent of New Hanover County Schools

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
- Nelson Mandela

New Hanover County is a system on the move and we are moving in the right direction. As superintendent, my vision is that New Hanover County Schools will become the leading educational system in the state. We will achieve this by focusing on our theme of “Reach, Equip, Achieve” and we will become the system of choice for parents, teachers, students and the community.

We will build on our past successes and strive to be a system that encourages innovation, creativity and student success. We will focus on the core values of: safe and caring schools, high standards for all, continuous improvement, and human resources development. During the 2011-12 school year we saw the results of our efforts take hold. We had the highest graduation rate in the districts history, achievement scores were up across the board. Our overall proficiencies were the highest in the region and among the best for urban districts in the state. Our SAT and ACT scores were above state and regional averages. Our people are making a difference!

The New Hanover County Board of Education has in its strategic plan to improve academic achievement, increase partnerships, and utilize 21st century technology as the primary focus areas. In order to reach these goals and continue the progress we have made, every student, parent, staff member, and stakeholder must be involved in our schools. We are responsible for every child in the New Hanover County Schools regardless of the role we serve.

We are committed to providing the highest quality education for every student. Our ultimate goal is for students to graduate prepared to compete in a global society and to lead productive healthy lives. We believe that educating children is one of the highest professional missions. The manner in which we accomplish this will have a lasting impact on the future of New Hanover County, North Carolina and the world in the years to come.
