Words have power, and voices have powerful impacts.
Rev. Dr. Clifford Barnett and fellow clergyman Jermaine
B. Armour visited Virgo 7th graders to show just that.
Working in tandem, the two preachers spoke to students
about the key elements of speeches such as building
rapport with your audience and practicing with acute
preparation. Dr. Barnett shared some personal anecdotes
recalling April 4, 1968, when the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King
was assassinated and the surrounding events of the time.
Both guest speakers read and recited part of Dr. King's
"What is your Life's Blueprint" speech, pointing out the
allusions and other devices used. By the end of class,
students had a strong reinforcement on their learning
goals of comparing and contrasting speech and print.

SeaPerch is an innovative underwater robotics program
that equips teachers and students with the resources
they need to build an underwater Remotely Operated
Vehicle (ROV). It teaches basic science and engineering
concepts, tool safety and technical procedures. The students
build their ROV from scratch and then compete with other teams
in obstacle challenges and a poster presentation contest.
Here are our girls at the SeaPerch competition.

Larry Reni Thomas speaks to STAE students
about one of his books, "Rabbit!, Rabbit!, Rabbit!.
This book is a historical fiction account of the events
surrounding the Wilmington 10. He stressed the
importance of reading as a way to stay informed.

Attorney George Rountree III spoke with STAE
students about the role his grandfather, Mr. George
Rountree, played in the 1898 coup in Wilmington. He focused
on the ability of students to rise above circumstances to
succeed despite negative influences.
