About DC Virgo Preparatory Academy

D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy will become New Hanover County Schools eighth middle school and will open in August 2012. The Blue Ribbon Commission will be a continuous partner, helping to guide the school and bridge community support. During its first year, approximately 100-150 6th grade students will attend D.C. Virgo. There will be the addition of one grade each year until there is a full 6th-8th grade middle school enrollment. Virgo does have an assigned attendance zone. Students may also apply to attend the school through open enrollment. Bus transportation will be available for all students. School uniforms, which will model professional business attire, will be provided for students. A staff of six teachers, one counselor, and a principal will be the initial staff for the first year. The entire staff will ensure that each child’s needs are met through close monitoring of progress.

To support the educational plan, students will have one-to-one access to a variety of educational technology. Each Virgo student will be issued an iPad. The school will be paperless as much as possible and will utilize digital tools for completing assignments and communicating with parents. Students will have access to use electronic diction- aries, encyclopedias and e-books, which replace many of the standard classroom written texts.

D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy will be funded from a variety of state, federal, and local revenue sources. To help fulfill its vision and goals, the school welcomes community assistance through donations and grants.
