School: New Hanover County Schools and Cape Fear Community College partnered to implement an early college high school on the north campus of Cape Fear Community College, which opened August 2007 and graduated its first senior class in the spring of 2011.  WECHS is a four to five-year public high school enrolling students in grades 9–13.  WECHS is located on the North Campus of Cape Fear Community College in the Cosmetology Building, Suite ND122.

Program: WECHS is designed to introduce students to a college setting in their freshman year of high school.  Within the high school, students take a rigorous academic curriculum of honors level and college level courses.   WECHS honors course offerings: 13

During their four or five years of high school, students will complete all high school requirements for the College/University Preparation pathway and an Associate's Degree, or College Transfer Core Diploma that will be transferable to a four year university/college, tuition free to the student. Students have up to five years to complete their degree programs, and once they finish graduate typically at 4, 4.5 or 5 years.

Grade Point Average (GPA) Calculation
GPA is computed using quality points. Beginning with grade nine, all subjects, whether passed or failed, are included in the computation. A minimum of 28 credits is required for graduation. In addition, each student must complete a minimum of 40-hour per year community service graduation requirement. Honors classes are weighted by one point. Cape Fear Community College Coursework is listed on the high school transcript.  Grades are recorded on the transcript and GPA is computed in January and June.

Post High School Placement:

  • 85% matriculated to 4-year colleges
  • 15% matriculated to 2-year institutions, work, military service or technical instruction
