“As a teacher, I believe my role is to help students see their value and see how they can leverage their talents and strengths to make a positive impact,” says Educator of the Year Elizabeth Felts. “While I utilize that philosophy every day, it is most apparent in our midterm project for my Honors Service Learning class. These opportunities for students to see their own value and how they use that to make a positive impact has a ripple effect that I am profoundly grateful to watch unfold far beyond my classroom.”
As a longtime supporter and sponsor of New Hanover County Schools, Hendrick Toyota of Wilmington is proud to recognize this year’s Teacher of the Year by the giving of a brand new 2020 Toyota RAV4. When asked to comment, Doug Thompson, the General Manager at Hendrick Toyota of Wilmington, reiterated his support for the teaching community by saying:
“We want to say thank you and show our support to all of the teachers who work so hard and invest so much of their time to our kids. We are so proud to be a part of this celebration year after year.”
New Hanover County Board of Education Member and Board Chair of the Educator of the Year Committee Stefanie Adams had this to add about district educators. “New Hanover County Schools educators are phenomenal,” says Ms. Adams. “They have shown their devotion and dedication to the students they serve and, though we can not celebrate them as we have done in the past, the Board of Education wants them all to know how incredibly proud we are of their efforts, not just during this challenging time but always.”

Because COVID-19 restrictions do not permit the district to hold the annual Educator of the Year banquet event, winners were celebrated with a Publisher Clearing House- style announcement. Each winner was visited at their residence or school with the event streamed live on Facebook, allowing for fellow educators, students and community members to view the award presentation.
