Board of Education Extends Superintendent Dr. Chris Barnes’ Contract Through 2029

Commitment to Excellence and Stability for New Hanover County Schools

The New Hanover County Board of Education is proud to announce the extension of Superintendent Dr. Christopher Barnes’ contract through June 2029. The decision, made during the Board’s July Agenda Review Meeting, reflects a continued commitment to excellence, stability, and long-term strategic growth for New Hanover County Schools (NHCS).

Dr. Barnes, whose initial contract was approved on March 1, 2025, has demonstrated visionary leadership and a clear dedication to student achievement, educator support, and community engagement. Under his guidance, NHCS has embraced bold strategies to strengthen academic performance, elevate staff collaboration, and ensure every student is prepared for success in college, careers, or the military.

We are building something special here in New Hanover County, and I am honored to continue this journey,” said Superintendent Dr. Chris Barnes. “This extension is not only a vote of confidence in our shared progress but also a promise to our students and staff that we will keep striving for excellence every day.”

Board Chair Melissa Mason added, “Dr. Barnes has shown exceptional leadership during a pivotal time for our district. His collaborative approach, strong leadership, and clear vision for academic success make him the right leader for NHCS. We’re excited to continue this partnership as we move forward together.”

The Board’s decision reaffirms its commitment to sustaining strong, forward-thinking leadership that prioritizes student outcomes and community trust. With this extension, NHCS is poised to continue its rise as a model of public education in North Carolina.
