Hannah Moon Named 2025 Burroughs Wellcome Fund Southeast Region Teacher of the Year
WILMINGTON, NC – Emsley A. Laney High School teacher Hannah Moon, an English teacher with an extraordinary dedication to her students and her craft, has been named the 2025 Burroughs Wellcome Fund Southeast Region Teacher of the Year!
Mrs. Moon, a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with degrees in English Literature and Education, has been a cornerstone of the New Hanover County Schools community for two decades. She earned her National Board Certification in 2022 and currently teaches English II, English IV, and Advanced Placement (AP) Literature, bringing passion and innovation to every lesson.
“I love and believe in education. I believe in Laney High School. I believe in New Hanover County. I believe in Wilmington. And I really believe in room 136, where everybody succeeds every day. Even if it’s a small win or a big win—they are going to win in room 136,” shared Mrs. Moon with heartfelt enthusiasm.
Over her 20-year career, Mrs. Moon has served as a leader both inside and outside the classroom. Her roles include department chair, mentor teacher, book club advisor, and partnership teacher for pre-service educators. She is also a proud participant in the prestigious UNCW Master Teacher Program (2022-2025), which honors outstanding educators who exemplify excellence in teaching.
“Mrs. Moon is an exceptional educator who embodies the qualities and dedication that this prestigious honor represents,” said NHCS Interim Superintendent Dr. Chris Barnes. “Through her innovative teaching practices, leadership roles, and community engagement, she has demonstrated a remarkable ability to inspire students, foster a positive school culture, and make a lasting impact on those around her.”
This incredible recognition is just the beginning for Mrs. Moon, as she now advances to compete against eight other educators statewide for the 2025 North Carolina Teacher of the Year title. The winner will be announced in Spring 2025.
