New Hanover County Board of Education Announces the Contract Extension of Interim Superintendent, Dr. Chris Barnes through June 2025.
During the November Regular Meeting of the Board of Education, the contract for Interim Superintendent, Dr. Chris Barnes was extended through June 2025.
Dr. Barnes expressed his gratitude for the Board's consideration by stating “I want to say that I appreciate all the support from this board, from the people in the district, and from the people that work in the community. I do agree that this has been a great opportunity for the district, this has been a great opportunity for me. I want to be fair to the new board members who I haven’t had the chance to work with yet. I really think it's going to take time for me to build up the same level of trust with the board members that are coming in that we have with the board members now and I feel uncomfortable making a permanent decision without their input.”.
After the vote of approval, Dr. Barnes stated: “It's the work that these folks are doing and the work of the teachers and the principals are doing in the schools that needs to be highlighted. I want what is best for the district just like all of you do. That may be me, that may not be me and I’m perfectly comfortable with the work that we are doing I'm also perfectly comfortable if the board finds someone that can take the district in the direction it needs to.”
Board Chair Pete Wildeboer commented. “ I am super excited and I know he’ll continue to do a great job as he has since he began with the district.”
The Board of Education will continue its search for a Superintendent through previously discussed avenues.
