WILMINGTON, N.C. — The New Hanover County Board of Education voted 6-0 to extend Superintendent Dr. Christopher Barnes' employment contract by one year, reaffirming the Board's confidence in his leadership and the district's continued progress.

The one-year extension reflects the Board's commitment to maintaining stability and advancing the priorities established through the district's strategic plan. Under Dr. Barnes' leadership, New Hanover County Schools has strengthened its focus on academic achievement, employee engagement, transparency, school safety, and community partnerships while embracing the district's guiding philosophy of becoming 1% Better Every Day.

Board Chair Pete Wildeboer said the Board's unanimous vote demonstrates its confidence in the district's direction.

"Dr. Barnes has led New Hanover County Schools with integrity, transparency, and a steadfast commitment to student success. In a relatively short period of time, we have seen measurable gains in academic performance and an overwhelming improvement in our district's culture. This year's Teacher Working Conditions Survey demonstrated significant progress across nearly every category, reflecting a stronger, more supportive environment for our employees and affirming the work being done to ensure staff feels valued, heard, and empowered. Combined with stronger engagement with our employees and community and a renewed commitment to accountability, these results give the Board great confidence in the direction of the district. We are pleased to extend Dr. Barnes' contract and look forward to continuing our work together on behalf of the more than 25,000 students and approximately 3,300 employees we proudly serve."

Dr. Barnes expressed his appreciation for the Board's continued confidence and emphasized that the district's success is the result of a collective effort.

"I am honored by the Board's confidence and grateful for the opportunity to continue serving the students, employees, families, and community of New Hanover County. This extension is not about one individual; it reflects the incredible work taking place every day across our 45 schools and district departments. Together, we have built a strong foundation, and I remain committed to ensuring we become 1% Better Every Day as we continue creating opportunities for every student to succeed."

The Board's action ensures continuity in leadership as the district continues implementing its strategic plan, advancing academic excellence, supporting employees, and preparing for future opportunities that will benefit students across New Hanover County.
