WILMINGTON, N.C. — New Hanover County Schools (NHCS) proudly recognizes the outstanding recipients of the 2025–2026 Educator of the Year Awards, honoring exemplary educators for their instructional excellence, leadership, and steadfast commitment to their students, schools, and communities.
The honorees were celebrated at the district’s annual Educator of the Year ceremony, held at the historic Brooklyn Arts Center. This highly anticipated event shines a spotlight on educators who inspire learning and foster a positive impact within the NHCS community.
“This evening is a celebration of the individuals who are truly at the heart of our district’s success – our phenomenal educators,” said Melissa Mason, Chair of the Board of Education.
The 2025–2026 NHCS Educator of the Year Award recipients are:

Elementary Educator of the Year: Desiree Traylor, First-Grade Teacher, Pine Valley Elementary

Middle School Educator of the Year & Overall Educator of the Year: Benjamin Lord, Social Studies Teacher, Myrtle Grove Middle School

High School Educator of the Year: Jessica Harvey, Social Studies Teacher, Laney High School

Assistant Principal of the Year: Alicia Chapman, Holly Shelter Middle School

Principal of the Year: Rosemarie Wheeler, Hubert A. Eaton Sr. Elementary School
