NHCS Launches Webpage with New Hanover High School Construction Updates
As construction begins at New Hanover High School, New Hanover County Schools has launched a webpage for families and community members that details the work being done and how to access different services at the school.
Phase I of the project is underway and will include stabilizing the foundation of the southern wall facing Market Street and determining the scope of work required to repair the masonry.
The building is structurally safe and instruction will continue when school starts Aug. 27.
“New Hanover High School is our community’s flagship school and we are proud of its history,” said Assistant Superintendent of Operations Eddie Anderson. “While this project will cause some inconvenience, it’s part of a long-term investment in the building.
”Because construction affects the main entrance of the school, offices will be relocated to the Princess Street side of the main building. The webpage details how students and visitors can access the school, where to park, and what work is being done. It will be updated regularly.
Students will also have the opportunity to tour the school and ask questions at the open house scheduled for Aug. 21 from 5-7:30 p.m.
“We’re excited to start the 24-25 school year and we’re ready for parents and students,” said Principal Philip Sutton. “We’re going to have some challenges we’re going to face but that’s okay. Our district is supporting us, our families and community are supporting us, and we’re excited for a new school year.
”Construction began on New Hanover High School in 1919 and the school opened in 1922. It is one of the oldest high school buildings still in use in North Carolina.
