Dual Credit

Earning College Credit in High School: NHCS + Cape Fear Community College

New Hanover County Schools students have two main opportunities to earn free college credit while still in high school through our partnership with Cape Fear Community College (CFCC).

Career & College Promise (CCP)

Career & College Promise (CCP) allows eligible high school students to take CFCC courses while completing their high school diploma. CCP offers both College Transfer Pathways - for students planning to attend a four-year university - and Career & Technical Education (CTE) Pathways, which lead to industry-recognized credentials, certificates, or technical degrees.

Many CCP courses count for both high school and college credit, allowing students to fulfill graduation requirements while earning progress towards a degree or certification. CCP helps students save time and money and gives them a head start on their future college or career goals.

Articulated Credit Through the NC High School to Community College Articulation Agreement

North Carolina's statewide High School to Community College Articulation Agreement allows students to earn college credit for specific high school CTE courses when they demonstrate proficiency. NHCS also works directly with Cape Fear Community College to establish additional local articulation agreements that create even more opportunities for students.

Articulation helps students move efficiently from high school to community college by ensuring they do not repeat coursework with the same learning outcomes. To receive articulated credit, students must:

  • Earn a B or higher in the eligible high school course, and
  • Demonstrate proficiency on the required Career and Technical Education Proof of Learning, such as:
    • scoring 90 or higher on the state, local, or third-party CTE post-assessment,
    • meeting proficiency on the performance-based measure (PBM), or
    • earning an approved industry credential (when applicable).

Students must also enroll in a North Carolina community college within two years of high school graduation, and the course must be part of their selected program of study.

Statewide articulated credits are honored at all NC community colleges, while local agreements—established specifically between NHCS and Cape Fear Community College—may only be recognized by CFCC.

High school students participating in a CCP pathway may also earn articulated credit when the CTE course aligns with their chosen pathway.

CFCC admissions staff will review transcripts and verify articulated credit. Students may be asked to provide additional documentation or demonstrate proficiency if needed. Families can contact Cape Fear Community College’s Admissions Office or their student’s Career Development Coordinator for help navigating articulated credit.
