Work-Based Learning

What is Work-Based Learning (WBL)?

Work-based learning (WBL) gives students real-work experiences where they can apply academic knowledge, build workplace skills, and develop professional relationships. An essential part of Career & Technical Education (CTE), WBL allows students to see the "why" behind what they learn in school while exploring careers, gaining hands-on experience, and preparing to graduate work- and life-ready.

Benefits for Students

  • Build positive relationships with adults who support growth and development
  • Explore career options and network for future employment
  • Gain hands-on, practical work experience
  • Develop important employability skills
  • Increase exposure to different workplaces, expectations, and environments

Benefits for Employers

  • Build a stronger, more prepared talent pipeline
  • Access a diverse and innovative pool of future workers
  • Enhance your reputation as a great place to work
  • Support your community by helping students succeed
  • Engage and motivate current employees through mentorship opportunities

Types of Work-Based Learning

  • Job Shadow – Students observe professionals on the job for a half or full day. This is an unpaid experience coordinated by the Career Development Coordinator.
  • Mentorship – Students build a mentor/mentee relationship with a professional over time, gaining guidance and insight into the workplace. This experience is unpaid
  • Internship – Students (juniors and seniors) complete tasks on the job, earning high school credit for 120 work hours. Internships can be paid or unpaid.
