Presented in Grade 5, focusing on basic physiological shifts, hygiene, and developmental changes associated with puberty.
Reproductive Health & Safety Education
New Hanover County Schools provides a comprehensive, age-appropriate Reproductive Health and Safety Education program designed to support students' developmental milestones. Our curriculum is structured across three primary tiers:
Family Life
Instruction across Grades 6–8 that expands on physical, emotional, and social dimensions of adolescent growth.
Sexual & Reproductive Health
Delivered during the graduation-required Health and Physical Education course (typically taken in 9th or 10th grade).
Required: Parent Permission & Opt-In
All three instructional levels are completely opt-in. Lessons are conducted by certified Health & PE teachers and specially trained school staff.
A paper permission form will be sent home by your child’s school. A signed opt-in form must be submitted each academic year before your student can join these lessons.
Board Policy Alignment
Our classes adhere completely to guidelines outlined by school board governance directives, ensuring state curriculum standards are met in a responsible, balanced environment.

We believe in transparency and partnership. A complete printed copy of all instructional materials for Growth and Changes and Family Life is kept on file at every elementary, middle, and high school building across the county.
