Accountability & Reporting
The New Hanover County Schools Testing and Accountability Department team members promote continuous improvement and accountability along with providing support to the district and individual schools through analysis of assessment results and interpretation of a variety of school performance data. Accurate data and statistically appropriate reports are provided to instructional leaders to sustain efforts to improve student achievement.
The New Hanover County Schools Annual Accountability Report is presented to NHCS Board of Education at the October meeting. This report provides insight into student academic progress and school performance at the district and individual school level. Specific data includes student performance on End-Of-Grade and End-Of-Course assessments, academic growth, School Performance Grades (SPG), and graduation rates.
District Testing Info
Students take different types of assessments throughout each school year. Some assessments are required by the federal or state governments while others are required by the local school district. The information gathered from district assessments serves many purposes such as monitoring programs that impact students' learning, identifying students who need additional academic support and supporting educators in measuring student progress toward content standards, skills, or performance benchmarks. State Testing Info
The New Hanover County Schools Testing and Accountability Department ensures that State Board of Education policies and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) guidelines are followed before, during, and after testing. Subsequently, we ensure a high quality data collection process that maintains the integrity of the data used to measure student improvement. Student test results play an increasingly important role in North Carolina's Accountability program and in the U.S. Department of Education. Test results are used as one component in promotion/retention decisions in grades 3 - 8, and also as a component in the High School graduation requirements.
