Dr. Tim Markley
Superintendent of New Hanover County Schools
“An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” - Benjamin Franklin
New Hanover County Schools continues to build on its successes and strives to be a system that encourages innovation, creativity and student success. As superintendent, my vision is that New Hanover County Schools will become the premiere educational system in the state. We will achieve this by focusing on our theme of “Engaging Students, Achieving Excellence.”
We are the system of choice for parents, teachers, students and the community. Our focus is on the core values of safe and caring schools; human resources development; high standards and continuous improvement; community partnerships and lifelong learning for all.
During the 2017-2018 school year, we continued to see the results of our efforts. Our graduation rate is the highest to date at 86.0%, and our assessment scores are among the highest in the region and among the best for urban districts in the state; and our SAT and ACT scores are above state and regional averages. NHCS is making a difference!
The New Hanover County Board of Education’s strategic plan includes improving academic achievement, increasing partnerships, recruiting and retaining highly-qualified employees and preparing students to be lifelong learners. In order to reach these goals and continue the progress we have made, every student, parent, staff member, and stakeholder must be involved in our schools. We are responsible for every child in New Hanover County Schools, regardless of the role we serve.
NHCS is committed to providing a high-quality education for every student. Our ultimate goal is for ALL students to graduate and be prepared to compete in a global society and to lead productive healthy lives. We believe that educating children is one of the highest professional missions. The manner in which we accomplish this will have a lasting impact on the future of New Hanover County, North Carolina and the world in the years to come.
