After School Programs

Mission, Vision, and Beliefs

The New Hanover County Schools After School Programs offer after school care for school-age students. All NHCS After School Programs are licensed by the North Carolina Division of Child Development/Department of Health and Human Services. Each of the after school programs provide a safe, healthy, caring environment for every enrolled child.
We believe:

  • every child deserves quality care.
  • school-age children must have a choice of various developmentally appropriate activities that promote learning experiences.
  • every parent has the right to an affordable on-site after school program.
Each enrolled student in the after school program is placed in an age appropriate group and supervised by a trained caregiver. A variety of developmentally appropriate activities including, but not limited to, art, games, science, dramatic play, music, books, and puzzles will be offered daily to enrolled students. Students play outdoors daily as a part of their planned program, weather permitting. Quiet time offers quiet activities and a time to complete homework. A healthy and delicious snack is offered daily. Field trips are offered periodically

Fee Rate Schedule


The NHCS After School Programs provide on-site affordable programs with quality care.

The program is a prepaid service. Parents/guardians must completely fill out the after school application and return it to the site with registration. During registration, they may choose to pay the weekly or monthly rate. Any parents/guardians that are interested in seeking financial assistance may contact the New Hanover County Department of Social Services.

Payment of fees is done monthly (at a discount) or weekly, depending on the site. In order to provide for more consistent care that covers all operating costs, there will no credit given when a child does not attend the program. All fees are due the Friday before the child attends the program if paying by the week or by the first day of the payment cycle if paying by the month. Failure to pay in advance will result in a late fee and will jeopardize the participation of your child in the program. Receipts are given after payment is accepted.

Q:  Where are the NHCS After School Programs located?
A:  The after school programs that are provided by NHCS are located on-site. 
Q:  What are the hours of operation during the school year?
A:  Each program operates on regular school days, from the time school is out until 6:00 PM.  Check with your after school program coordinator for more information about care provided on half days and workdays.
Q:  What will be provided for students while in care?
A:  Students will have the opportunity to work on homework and enjoy a variety of indoor and outdoor play with trained staff.  Healthy snacks are provided daily.  Special guests and field trips are extra activities that may be provided.
Q:    Will students have time to complete all of their homework before play?
A:    All students are given homework time.  A staff member will be available to assist students as needed.  Students are required to go outside daily (weather permitting) and will have an opportunity to continue homework or choose to participate in centers or activities.
Q:    Are NHCS After School Programs licensed?
A:    All NHCS After School Programs are required to fulfill the NC DCD requirements for licensure.
Q:    How are students grouped?
A:    Students are grouped according to their grade.
Q:    How are NHCS After School Programs funded?
A:    The programs are self-sustaining programs through parent fees and subsidy for licensed programs.
Q:    Why are NHCS After School Programs licensed?
A:    NHCS believes in quality school-age programming that meets enhanced standards set by the state.
