Mission Statement

Interscholastic athletics is a co-curricular activity and is an integral part of the educational process for student athletes within New Hanover County Schools. Athletics provide not only an avenue for the development of athletic skills, but for the development of the total person. Athletics teaches life skills including responsibility, accountability, team building, fair play, and determination. The New Hanover County School System emphasizes academic accountability and fair play. It promotes attitudes and practices that keep winning in perspective and discourages activities that would be considered unsportsmanlike.

The goal of the NHCS athletic department is to provide opportunities for student athletes to excel in teamwork, sportsmanship, self-discipline, acceptable personal and social behavior, and character. Members of teams and organizations must always serve as exemplars of high moral character and demonstrate appropriate academic commitment, which is expected of all students. Participation in athletics is a privilege, not a right. The NHCS athletic program is designed to produce well-rounded citizens who can take their place in a community and a democratic society. The program is intended to develop leadership skills, a sense of responsibility and accountability, and sportsmanlike attitudes in the student population.

One of the main goals of the athletic department is to teach the concept of sportsmanship. Good sportsmanship requires that everyone be treated with respect. This includes members of the opposing team, teammates, officials, coaches, administrators, and spectators. Winning is exciting, but winning at any cost is not the goal. Emotional balance promotes consistency in the lives of athletes, which affects everything they do. Everyone wins, especially the athletes, who move comfortably from one responsibility and relationship to another, benefiting themselves as well as their parents, teachers, and coaches.

Homeschool - Charter - Private

Homeschool students do have the ability to participate in NHCS athletics at the zoned based on the student’s established domicile. To be considered eligible as a homeschool student for athletic participation in NHCS, please review NHCS Board Policy 3105 and contact your child’s zoned school for additional scholastic and athletic requirements.

Students enrolled in charter or private schools are not eligible to participate in NHCS athletics. North Carolina Law states that students are not allowed to be enrolled in two separate public-school units (PSUs) simultaneously.

Transfer Information

The NHCS Athletic Department strives to ensure fairness and compliance for all athletic programs and student athletes. The following policies and procedures govern student-athletes who transfer within NHCS following their initial entry into the 9th Grade.

NHCSAA Policy 1.2.5 ATHL-005, Section 5 - Transfer Requirements

After a student’s initial entry into Grade 9, and absent a change in residence for a bona fide purpose, a student who transfers from one participating school to another participating school within the same PSU shall not participate in interscholastic athletics for 365 calendar days following the student’s enrollment in the new school, unless the governing body of the PSU has adopted a policy allowing immediate eligibility for students who are assigned by the PSU to a different school within the same PSU.
After a student's initial entry into Grade 9, if a student transfers to a new school within 365 calendar days after that school hires a coach for an interscholastic athletics team who was previously employed as a coach for an equivalent sport by the school from which the student is transferring, the student shall be ineligible to participate in interscholastic athletics for that sport for 365 calendar days following the student’s enrollment in the new school.
