School Assignment Overview by Grade Level

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL OPTIONS
 
An Assigned School is a school near your home to which your child is guaranteed admission.  If needed, transportation is provided.   Click here to find your child’s assigned school.
 
A Year-Round School offers the North Carolina curriculum offered on a nine-week on, three-week intercession schedule.  You must apply to these schools and they must be within your assigned territory.  Transportation is provided if student resides within the designated transportation zone. Elementary schools following a year-round calendar are Codington and Eaton. Students are selected by random lottery. Click here for a link to the NHCS calendars.

  • Applications  accepted for the kindergarten lottery from March 1 – March 12, 2021 will be included in the initial lottery draw.

  • Kindergarten notifications will be mailed on or before April 30, 2021
  • Grade 1–5 applications accepted March 15- April 23, 2021 will be included in the initial lottery draw.

  • NHCS will continue to accept new applications for year-round until the day before school begins. 
A Magnet School is a school with a focus area that draws students from all over the county. The North Carolina Standard Course of Study is taught using this focus area as an approach.   Within New Hanover County Schools, there are three elementary magnet schools: Rachel Freeman School of Engineering, The International School at Gregory, and Annie Snipes Academy of Arts & Design. Visit the Magnet Schools page for complete descriptions of NHCS magnet schools.  If you live in the attendance zone for a magnet school, you do not need to apply to that school.  If you live outside the attendance zone, you must apply. Students are selected by random lottery.
 
Rachel Freeman School of Engineering and Annie Snipes Academy of Arts & Design are on the Restart Year-Round calendar.  The International School at Gregory is on the traditional school calendar. Click here for a link to the NHCS calendars.

An Open Choice school is a school outside a student’s assigned school area for which the student may apply for a lottery assignment as an “open choice” placement if there is space available at the school within the student’s grade level. 
 
  • Applications accepted March 2 through April 16, 2021. 
  • Random lottery will be held to select students for available spaces. 
  • Applications submitted after April 16, 2021 will be considered a Transfer. 
  • Public school transportation WILL NOT be provided.

HIGH SCHOOL OPTIONS

An Open Choice school is a school outside a student’s assigned school area for which the student may apply for a lottery assignment as an “open choice” placement if there is space available at the school within the student’s grade level.
