School counselors are responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program under the guidance of the American School Counseling Association. The domains covered in a school counseling program include personal/social, academic and college/career exploration/decision-making School counseling programs are delivered through individual counseling, small group sessions, and whole-class lessons.

School Counseling Internships

New Hanover County Schools welcomes the opportunity to partner with university programs by hosting student interns. A memorandum of understanding with the university is required before student placement can be taken into consideration. NHCS reserves the right to deny placement at any time.

Students desiring an internship placement are not permitted to directly contact schools or human resources regarding placement opportunities.
