Why are all schools now able to operate under Plan A (in-person learning for all students every day)?
The decision to allow minimal physical distancing reflects the lower risks associated with COVID-19 for our students, and research that shows lower risk for COVID-19 transmission in K-12 schools. It also supports working families, and provides more children with the opportunity to access other critical services provided in schools, including meals, regular physical activity, and social interaction.
Does my student age 12 and older need to get a COVID-19 vaccine before returning to school?
At this time, there is no requirement for students to receive a COVID-19 vaccine for school entrance. However, we encourage parents to talk with their primary care provider about vaccinating their child. Can my child do remote learning instead?
We know that in-person school is fundamental to children’s development and well-being – especially for younger children. Our schools provide academic support; the chance to build social and emotional skills; a safe, comfortable space; nutritious meals, enrichment through the arts and athletics, and opportunities for play and activity with students’ peers.
New Hanover County Schools will fully reopen all 45 schools on Aug. 23, including athletics, field trips, volunteer opportunities, etc., in compliance with the guidelines established in the NC SafeSchools Toolkit.
The e-Academy, developed before the COVID pandemic as a partnership between NHCS and homeschool students and parents, remains an option for grades 6-12. The e-Academy is not equivalent to the fully remote learning or virtual school options developed and offered during the 2020-21 school year. Click this link for more information on the e-Academy:

Students in grades K-5 who are experiencing a medical or family emergency will be offered the hospital/home program as they were before the COVID pandemic.
What physical distancing will be in place?
Will face coverings/masks be required for students and staff when we return to school?
At this time, we will continue to follow guidance from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services on face masks.
In accordance with New Hanover County Board of Education policy, face coverings are required indoors for all Pre-K to 12th-grade students, unless there is a mask exception. To be considered for a mask exception, please contact your child’s school.
Teachers, staff, and adult visitors are required to wear face coverings.
Face coverings are also required while traveling on buses or other school transportation vehicles, and are recommended outdoors when individuals are unable to maintain at least 6 ft apart from others.
What are the requirements for school sports?
Will students be screened before entering school?
Where can I find all COVID-19 public health guidance documents for New Hanover County Schools?
Where can I find NC Department of Public Instruction’s operational guidance for public schools?
