In accordance with NHCS Board Policy 6140, New Hanover County Schools Health Advisory Council (SHAC) meets regularly to increase awareness of NHCS programs and policies that address the health and well-being of students, staff, and community members. Members of SHAC represent the ten components of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model.

Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC model)

SB Policy 6140: Overarching Goals
Using the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model as its basis, the council in conjunction with the school board has established three overarching goals for the district that are to be customized at each school:
1. Student
Over the next three years, reach a teacher-to-student ratio comparable to other curricular areas.
2. Staff
Cultivate a culture supportive of adult Social Emotional Learning.
3. Community
Align with community partnerships and task forces focusing on some/all of the WSCC components.
The council shall provide periodic reports to the board and public regarding the status of its work. In addition, the council shall assist the wellness coordinator in creating an annual report that includes the minutes of physical activity and the minutes of physical education and/or healthful living education received by students in the system each school year, as well as any other information required by the State Board of Education or NCDPI.
